The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is offering a heap of discounts through August when you book the railroad’s bus/train combo trip. Riders can save 10 percent if they ride the bus to Silverton and take the train — pulled by a historic, coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive — back to Durango as it winds along the Animas River through the San Juan Mountains.

That means a little less time on the train but a little more money in your wallet. The discounted rates are available Aug. 2-5, Aug. 7-8, Aug. 10-13, Aug. 15, Aug. 17-21 and Aug. 23-31 — and the railroad may add more dates.

The bus leaves Durango at 9:30 a.m. and arrives in Silverton at 11 a.m., beating the train by 30 minutes and giving you an extra half hour to explore the downtown, browse some shops or grab a bite to eat. Your train back to Durango leaves at 1:45 p.m. and arrives at 5:15 p.m. — just in time for dinner or a drink at one of Durango’s breweries.
