The month of June is super important for many reasons: It’s the first full month of summer vacation. It’s also the month of the summer solstice. And, of course, it’s Pride Month!
June was chosen as Pride Month to memorialize the Stonewall rebellion, which is widely viewed as the start of the LGBT liberation movement in the U.S. Cities around the nation and across the globe celebrate with pride parades and events, and Durango is no exception.
Every year, the organizers of the Durango Pride Festival, which was established in 2000, ask locals to come out and show their love and support for the LGBTQ+ community. The festival is a chance to celebrate everyone’s differences — and recognize their similarities — and “to learn that all members of the community will grow and prosper with acceptance and inclusion,” according to Four Corners Alliance for Diversity. Everyone is welcome at Durango Pride events! Although some evening events are for the grownups, the parade and events at the park are all family-friendly.
Durango Pride events take place June 21-25, 2017, but the biggest are the Pride Parade and Pride Festival on Saturday, June 24. The Pride Procession will line up at 11:30 a.m. at Grassburger, 726 1/2 Main Ave., to make its way up Main Avenue. Following the procession, get on over to Pride in the Park Family Festival at Buckley Park on Main Avenue between 12th and 13th streets for a day of food, fun and music.
Don’t miss the other amazing Pride Durango 2017 events, including a drag show with a RuPaul Drag Race Queen and a Black Light Glow Dance with Imaginario Circus!
