Black Friday. Small Business Saturday. Cyber Monday. I wonder if Sunday feels left out…?

For better or worse, the days after Thanksgiving Day seem to be all about shopping for Christmas. Black Friday in Durango will include all the usual big-box stores and sales, but in a small mountain town like Durango, Small Business Saturday is where it’s at.

Downtown Durango is a haven of locally owned stores, shops and boutiques, art galleries, artisans and artisanal foods. Here are some of our favorite locally owned businesses to patronize on Small Business Saturday (or whenever).

Animas Chocolate Co.

Not only does Animas Chocolate Co. offer their own handmade products, they also have an entire section in their store where they sell locally made gifts and foods. The company crafts its own truffles, bars and chocolate confections using the highest-quality chocolate and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. You can visit the store to choose a selection for that special someone (yourself) or order online. Bonus: Animas Chocolate Co. is only one block south of the Quality Inn Durango!

Old Colorado Vintage

Old Colorado Vintage is a super cool consignment shop in downtown Durango. The store features vintage and antique clothing, shoes, jewelry and other items. If you’re looking for that one-of-a-kind gift for that one-of-a-kind person start here. The quirky treasures within never disappoint when looking for a present for that person who eschews brand names for unique treasures.

Urban Market

On the other hand, not everyone loves vintage or antique items. To them, vintage is “old,” and consignment is “used.” Don’t fret: Urban Market is the all-new answer. Urban Market has two stores: One store sells larger furniture options, which may be a bit difficult to wrap or fit in the stocking, while the other shop offers home goods, decor, gifts and knickknacks.

Four Leaves Winery

Four Leaves Winery serves two purposes when shopping in downtown Durango. First, when you just can’t take the shopping frenzy anymore, you need to take a break. Four Leaves Winery is a great place to sit back, relax and take a breather in downtown with a cozy tasting room and a selection of appetizers. Owner and winemaker Dean Fagner is always around to describe the different wines, which will be helpful for the second reason you should stop in: gifts. A bottle of wine is a gift that never goes wrong. Plus, they could fit in a stocking (please be sure aforementioned stocking is secured to the mantle. Actually, just put a bow on it and call it a Christmas Day.)

Shopping Sustenance

When you’re looking for a shopping lunch break or need post-shopping dinner fare to recuperate, check out Nini’s Taqueria, which offers the largest selection of homemade salsas in town, or Earth Girls Goodies & Eatery , which is close to the Durango Quality Inn and is completely vegan and organic with foods and snacks to go.
Don’t let the holidays stress you out. Whether you’re visiting for Thanksgiving or need a getaway before the Christmas craziness, come stay with us at the Quality Inn Durango. Winter is a magical in our mountain town, so book your room today!
