While you’re staying with us at the Durango Quality Inn this weekend, you have a chance to ride the historic Durango & Silverton train and do some good when you buy your ticket.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is holding a Wildland Firefighter Benefit on Sunday, July 14, to raise money for the families of the 19 Arizona firefighters who died while battling the Yarnell Hill fire northwest of Phoenix.

According to its website, the Durango and Silverton railroad will donate $19 from every ticket purchased for the 8:45 a.m. train on Sunday, July 14, to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, a nonprofit organization that will ensure the money goes directly to the families of the 19 fallen Arizona firefighters.
Local fire crews, fire trucks and ladder trucks will gather at the Durango Depot to send the train and its passengers off with proper honors. Several local agencies, including the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority, Durango Police Department, La Plata County Mounted Patrol, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Forest Service, will be present and accepting donations during the event. They will send all donations to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
Even if you’re not riding, the Durango and Silverton railroad “welcomes everyone to join us at the depot for this special train send-off.”
