Durango: Music in the Mountains Festival

Durango_Music in the Mountains

When you think of Durango, Colorado, you probably think of hiking, biking, rafting and all sorts of fun — and gritty — outdoor recreation.

Well, get ready to gussy up because, for the past 27 years, Durango has been home to Music in the Mountains, a classical music festival that features world-class orchestra performances and chamber concerts. (Actually, “casual wear” is entirely appropriate for these concerts, but still: You might want to take a shower after that day of mountain biking.)

Every summer since 1987, the Music in the Mountains festival has featured classical music with orchestra and chamber performances at several venues in and around Durango.

Music in the Mountains runs through July 7-28 with more than 20 performances, and the festival wraps up its 2013 season with a “Symphonic Poetry” concert at Durango Mountain Resort.

Full orchestra concerts usually last about 2 hours with a 15-minute intermission, while chamber concerts are a bit shorter. You can buy your tickets online or at the Music in the Mountains’ box office at 1063 Main Ave. in Durango (open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday or call 970-385-6820).

So while you’re staying with us at the Durango Quality Inn, be sure to catch some culture at Music in the Mountains.
